Raggedy Ann and Andy have delighted young and old for nearly eight decades. This 90-minute video documentary chronicles the origins of these floppy moppets, tracing their evolution as dolls, storybook characters and collectibles, and showcases the many talents of their multi-talented creator, Johnny Gruelle.
Scripted by folklorist and Gruelle biographer Patricia Hall, this production features dozens of historical photographs and documents, plus hundreds of rare dolls, toys, books, and original art from the collections of Hall and fellow collectors. Alongside the history of the Raggedys from the Volland, Exposition,
Molly-'Es, Georgene, Knickerbocker, Applause, and Hasbro eras, the video offers invaluable tips on dating and distinguishing dolls and collectibles from different time periods. And, in the on-camera interviews with Patricia Hall and Kim Gruelle, Johnny Gruelle's grandson, the life and times of Johnny Gruelle come alive.
"…well-written…. excellent introduction to the subject. While the dolls are the main focus, the other collectibles associated with Raggedy Ann and Andy are illustrated and discussed. This sense of perspective is much appreciated. No amateur work in this video. Sirocco has raised the antiques and collectible video standards a notch or two."
-The Rinker Report
"This video is a comprehensive presentation about these two dolls who have touched the heart of America and their creator, Johnny Gruelle; and a valuable tool in identifying these collectible dolls. It is also an informative resource for anyone interested in American social history."
